Whatsa happenin'...hot stuff...?

It's been a few days since I posted; it's funny, sometimes I feel like my mind is a sieve. I have all these great things I want to blog about - and then they completely slip my mind. How great could they have been, right? Clearly, if I can't hang onto them in my head for a day or two - then certainly they can't be that noteworthy.

Sort of like this wine I'm drinking. Dare I say - terrible. It's a wine that a producer out in California would like me to carry if they can get distribution. They sent me 4 different varietals - and this is my first try. Let's hope at least one of the other three is better than this one. Ugh.

So let's see. I've got a few tidbits retained that I can share with you. And they go like this:

1. With the good - there is the bad. I saw two movies over the weekend - not at the theatre, but at home. The first one was "The Hurt Locker". Definitely a great movie....though, truthfully not sure why that was the name of the movie as a whole. I could've come up with better names but clearly I'm not the Academy Award winner in the room, so.... we'll leave it at that. The other movie was...well, let's just say that it has officially knocked "Eye of the Beholder" out of the spot of being the worst movie ever. It's called "Moon", with Kevin Spacey and Sam Rockwell. It was nothing short of awful. The premise seemed pretty cool.... but it fell beyond flat. It was horrible actually! Do yourself a favor, and don't ever see it. You can't get that 90 minutes of your life back....

2. Who wants to be on Food TV? I do! They (being Food TV, that is) added a last minute audition spot for "The Next Food Network Star" here in Boston and so I figured "what the heck?" and I went. Rumor has it that the cast is pretty much set - there are only a few spots left open for contestants so I knew that my chances were pretty much slim to none. But I went anyway - and it was really sort of fun. I mean, you go with no expectations - and you hope for the best. We're supposed to hear if we're wanted for an on-camera audition, and I'm not holding my breath. I'm sure they're looking for someone with a better culinary background, but it was fun to try anyway. There's a high about auditioning, and truly - that's probably the last one I'll be going on.

3. So, it looks like we may be moving. No place far - we're staying in the same town we're in - great school system, good friends, fantastic commuting location. But there are different things we need in in a house, and neighborhood. Our house officially went on the market today. Woohoo! Now if we can only find a house we like....

There's probably more...but I'll wait until another day. Besides, if I say it all today - whatever will I have to share tomorrow?

Once upon a time, in your wildest dreams....

I've always believed that when you dream of a person who's passed - it's a visit from them.

I'd never had one -but I've always firmly believed that's what it means - and if ever a friend mentioned that they'd had a dream about a loved one, I'd try to reaffirm that belief with them so that they'd feel good about the experience.

I don't typically remember my dreams; and if I do, the funny thing is - they don't typically involve people I know. I mean, I know who they are - but they don't look like the people they're supposed to be. Almost as if it's just representation of who they are; but usually it's almost just so faint, it's like a watercolor painting that wasn't quite dry and someone threw water on it so the images start to melt away.

But this morning, I dreamt of my Mom. She was there... and she was sick, but she wasn't incapacitated; and she was walking along the beach with me - which is rather ironic because she never liked the beach, and I even vaguely recall saying that to her -- but yet there we were. Anyway, there are many details to the dream which I won't get into here - but the way it ended was that she sent me a birthday gift. The last thing before I woke up suddenly was hearing her voice saying "because it's your birthday honey..."

I woke up..... and I cried.
(We all know how infrequently I cry. It just felt so real, I could still smell the ocean.)

I thought maybe today was the 8th -- but it's not; tomorrow is 3 months that she passed; my birthday is next month.

And today.....I had a visit.
Maybe it's an early birthday present.

Top 10, part deux...

So, I'm not very good at these kinds of lists truthfully. It's hard to determine categories for things that happen in any person's life, you know what I mean? So I think it's best for me to just have a final Top 10 of things that happened or had impact in this girl's life in 2009. Good, bad or otherwise.

Again, not in any meaningful order -- just how they come to me.

10. Leaving my job. Wow, had I dreamed of when that day would come but nothing prepared me for the reality of it. It wasn't a bad thing -- it was a great thing, but still a little sad. Of course that lasted oh, about a minute. I don't miss it a bit -- being in business for myself and being my own boss is beyond gratifying. Having friends and family work side by side with me is a great thing; I often get tinges of sentimentality when I see things that have to do with the Air Force or the base -- but other than that....nada. I loved my job and I truly made the best of things, but I was beyond frustrated knowing I was capable of doing great things and was held back because I wasn't in the Government proper.

9. My knee surgery. That was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced. I mean, you are awake for CSections and that's pretty interesting but it's not nearly the same thing as actually getting to watch what's happening inside your knee surgically. Definitely one of the more fun things that happened this year. Sounds kind of silly I know - but it alleviated my discomfort and was educational and fun at the same time.

8. Finding out my Mother has Cancer. The news itself of her having the disease wasn't all that shocking, only because it is so rampant. What was shocking, was the poor care (in my opinion) that she had received up to this point. Finally, she is going to Dana Farber -- tomorrow actually, and I am going with my parents -- to get what we hope/wish/pray will be a diagnosis (finally!!!) and hopefully a better prognosis than what she received in Florida.

7. Being hardworking, diligent and patient. While this was a difficult year for everyone on so many levels -- it was a good year for us with business. Patience and hard work, with a sprinkle of due diligence really paid off in allowing us to launch a new business. I have to say that over the last year prior to this opportunity I had been so frustrated; we came so close so many times, but timing can be everything and truly while luck only goes so far -- it's all about the work that goes into it.

6. Spending time with my family. Sounds mundane and not necessarily listworthy - but the truth of the matter is -- that it is. This summer while I was not able to take any time off because of the buildout, I still was on a more flexible schedule than being at work and was able to spend a few days with the family at Water Country, Canobie Lake Park, etc. Even just staying at home later in the morning before heading off to the store site -- it was far more enjoyable of a way to start my day than stressing over traffic and what time I might arrive in the office. Again, it's tied to being my own boss -- and while I'm incredibly busy at times, it offers me a luxury of time with my family that I haven't been able to enjoy before.

5. Having to adjust to the fact that my children think on their own. Let me tell you - that's a tough one. Trying to parent firmly, discipline strongly and not be too stifling is a tightrope I've had to walk on all this year for the first time. Princess Petunia was the first one to challenge -- and her boldness has encouraged her brother to express himself as well. This has been a huge event this year in my life and while it was a change that I knew would come -- I still wasn't quite prepared for when it happened.

4. Abandoning Dunkin Donuts forever. I have completely transitioned to Starbucks. After spending probably hundreds of dollars in coffee that tasted so horrible that I threw it away -- I finally smartened up and actually spend only an extra .25 for a cup of coffee that I enjoy every single time. It feels like a monkey is off my back -- truly. How crazy is that? Discovering that I can really enjoy a cup of coffee consistently -- that's a huge happening in this girl's life after months of being disappointed by Dunks.

3. Achieving many of the goals I'd set for myself. I ran the 5K sooner than anticipated; I did a yoga marathon even sooner post-surgery. I continually worked on accepting the things I could not change and actively worked on changing the things that I could - that needed changing. And some things were just fine the way they were.

2. Seeing a Broadway play front row. Wow, did that spoil me forever. G and I going to see David Mamet's "Speed the Plow" at the Barrymore --with Jeremy Piven and cast practically sweating on us -- was amazing. So impressive, that we're thinking of going back and seeing the aforementioned director's new production of "Race" at that same theatre in the next few weeks. It was an event that truly had an impact on me as far as spending quality time with G, appreciating and loving NYC -- and throughly appreciating theatre even more than I already did. It made me long for what I might have done at one time... but at the same time appreciate the choices I made in not pursuing that career as fully as I could've. Because if I had -- I wouldn't be here today. And I'm pretty happy where I'm at....

1. Proving that I'm capable of doing great things. Listen, I knew I could do it -- but let's be honest there were plenty who had their doubts. Building the store was a fun, frustrating, stressful and yet enjoyable process. Our new store is something I'd always hoped it would be...and yet at the same time, I look back at G and I and think "wow, who'd have thought that two kids from nothing and nowhere would do all this...." But again, it just shows what a little hard work, good common business sense and a drive to succeed can get you. Sure it's only in it's infancy, but it's off to a good start -- and I'm so very proud. Aside from my children who are my greatest accomplishments in life -- it's up there on things to be proud of. Some people go through their whole life and don't have much to show for it -- and that's okay; there's nothing wrong with that. But we have built goodwill with a brand; we have actually made history in a community.

And how awesome is that?!?!?

"When I grow up, I wanna be famous..." - Part Deux

I'm going on a casting call!

The upside -- it's for Food Network.
The downside -- it's not to host a show.
It's a reality show of sorts.
We're not super clear on the concept but we're guessing it's modeled after "The Amazing Race".

However....this does not mean that the audition process itself doesn't lend exposure.

It's a team effort -- I'm partnering with another "foodie" girlfriend of mine on this audition since they specified doubled partners.

If I don't make it, eh - I won't be heartbroken.
But I am however, thrilled for the audition and interview.

As I said, truly the dream never dies.

'Cause see when I was younger I would say..." When I grow up, I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies..."

Last night Kate Winslet made a very appropo statement, something to the effect of "none of us ever dreamed we'd be in a category with Meryl Streep". To be considered of the same caliber as the lovely Ms. Streep was something that all of us young, thirtysomethings who wanted to be actresses dreamed about. To be actually competing against her or with her, was never part of the equation. Though I think it came across as an age thing last night - to me, her reference was that it was more of an unattainable goal...a pipe dream. To be considered similar to Meryl Streep meant you were the pinnacle of what you could achieve - something that doesn't happen to "us" -- it happens to other people.

Watching the Oscars is the one night a year that I can honestly say that I revel in the "would've could've should've" in my life. I can entirely relate to the actresses and their emotions as they overflow. I thought that this year in particular was the nicest way to present the nominees with their moment of glory; instead of watching a small clip of their work, to have them honored by those who have held the prestigious honor before them and speak accolades of their bodies of work on a very warm and personal level -- was to me by far, a touching and gracious way to honor those who were anxiously awaiting to hear the words "and the Oscar goes too...".

I was so very proud of my girl Jennifer Aniston, who though clearly nervous -- looked beautiful, and was so gracious in the face (literally, directly) of her heartbreakingly beautiful ex husband, and his homewrecker of a...what is she anyway...girlfriend, if you will. If you ask me, Angelina didn't look that great. A little too thin and pale, but again - I've always been on Team Aniston so maybe I'm a bit biased.

The only real gripe I had about the show was that I thought the camera men were going a little crazy during the portion where they show those who have passed onto the silver screen in the sky. They kept zooming in and out...I couldn't see all of the names, and truly - that's an important piece of the show. At least to me it is. ( Note to the Director: please, please keep the camera straight, focused and on the screen next year. Thanks!)

So to the very end I watched...thinking back to how if the world was as small of a place as it is today back when I was able to dedicate my time to finding employment in the theatrical field -- what would I have been able to achieve? Would I possibly have been on stage last night, accepting my award....similar to how myself, and clearly Kate Winslet - had done, back when we were 8,9,10 years old - speaking into a brush at the bathroom mirror?

Truly, the dream never dies.

If life hands you a bushel of lemons...

Go make yourself some lemonade, God damn it.

I didn't get great news last night; the business venture has been put on hold yet again....
I know that everything happens for a reason, but when you're this close, it hurts.
And, it's frustrating. The whole reason why I wanted to do a startup was because the business that was this close -- fell through last year (same time last year, interestingly enough).

Truthfully, it was a very expensive startup; had the location been a different one, the cost would have been lower, less buildout expenses – and I would be a very happy girl this morning.
Instead, here I sit disappointed – and drinking a cup of lemonade that I wished had just a bit more sugar in it….

So where to go from here? Well, I’ve got my back up plan – which isn’t what I wanted, but still at the same time, it’s better than not having a plan at all.

And now to think of the future.

I will have my business. It will just take some time in finding a spot that needs less work – or possibly even revisiting buying an existing shop in the right location.

Plus there are other things that I love. I’m not seeing any rules in the WEEI sports blogger contest that prohibits multiple submissions, so I’ll enter a few more times and see what happens. My original goal in life was sportscasting, and we all know I’ve always not-so-secretly wanted to get into the broadcasting medium – radio or television – so who knows.

I may not be happy where I am careerwise today – but it’s not for a lack of trying.
And I’m not about to give up either.

Requiem of a dream…

I've mentioned before that I've been having dreams that have been rather vivid. I either don't remember dreaming at all…or they're so real that I wake up thinking that it really happened.

Normally, there's only one or two key people in my dream that I know in "real life" - and normally I know why I'm dreaming the scenario. They're relatively easy to interpret.

But more often than not, my friends in the dream - are my friends in the dream, but no one I know in real life. Does that make sense?
So last night's dream was interesting.

My friends Lynne and Kathy M/D (friends in real life) and I flew to see a Red Sox game in Los Angeles. But no one was there really, it was practically empty. So we sat near the players dugout. Funny thing is, the stadium was like a little league field as opposed to a major league stadium. So, we're sitting near the players and of course, Jason Varitek was there. But he wasn't in uniform. He was wearing an orange shirt and jeans, as if it was like an "off day" for him. So anyway, of course I couldn't even look in his direction and my girlfriends kept trying to get him to notice me. They were like saying my name really loud and whatnot, and I just kept looking away. One of the girls spilled a drink and I looked over and saw him looking our way and laughing. Then he said "Hi Rebecca", but he mispronounced my name. It was like "Reb-ec-ca", sort of robotic and I said "that's not how you say my name!" and he laughed and said "I know, I was just trying to make you laugh". And then I looked at him and it was like a movie from my perspective - he was laughing and just smiling so happily, not at me - but with me. The next thing I remember, I'm clearly dating him but now he's a football player, and he's playing a game. I'm at a stadium and I’m with all the football players' wives - but they're far older than I am. And they keep clamoring around "Mrs. Shula". And I said, "oh, I love Shula's restaurant. Best steaks ever…everything's ala carte, and it's wonderful". Then one of the women says to me "she cooks it all herself you know". And I said "she cooks what?" and the woman replies "all the food at the restaurant. She does it all herself.." and I look at her shaking my head saying "that's impossible, one woman cant' cook all that food for multiple restaurants! You mean she created the menus, right?" ….and that's all I remember.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it means - if it means anything at all. Normally, a dream this vivid means something. Yet, this one's just so random. I mean what would I even try to look up?
It's not as if I can find an entry in the dream dictionary for "Jason Varitek"!
Go figure...
